Just before the Christmas holidays, we were joined by Class 1 from Bradworthy Primary Academy, as they went on a minibeast hunt !
Our morning was of 2 halves, with snack time in the middle !
It started by the children splitting into 5 groups, each with an adult, so go exploring around the garden/buildings to see what mini beasts they could find. They all had an identification sheet, including worms, beetle, slugs, woodlouse, centipedes, flies and more, in both picture and word form and a tally sheet. So, off we went in our groups to see where we could locate these beasts. The best place, which had a lot of different species, was under the bark of a felled tree. We also found quite a few in the stone walls around the farm.
After snack time, we then went into session 2. A very different session this time. We looked at all the farm animals that were in for the winter, talked about what different things they eat and why and how we keep them safe, happy and healthy over the winter. We looked at the difference between hay/clamp silage/round bale silage/rushes/straw. We looked at the rolled barley/coarse ration/rearer pellets/sugar beet, all of which are fed to different animals.
Thank you class 1 for being so well behaved and we look forward to doing another bug hunt in the summer !
